Healthy Diet

January 18, 2013 — 7:13pm

At the age of 53, my psoriasis has virtually disappeared. First, three years ago I began adjusting my diet and focusing on whole grains (bread, cereal, pasta), low saturated fats like olive oil and flaxseed oil, nuts (all natural peanut butter mixed with a little molasses, cashews), salmon and tuna for omega 3 oils, 1% milk, eggs and gradually eliminating most of the hydrogenated foods I had been used to snacking on (chips, crackers, cookies, microwave popcorn). Second, every day I take a good multivitamin, three calcium/vitamin D/magnesium combos (total 1800 mg. calcium, 1200 vitamin D and 750 mg. magnesium) which help maintain a balanced nervous system, 1.2 mg. of folic acid for good skin, hair and nail health, 3000 mg. vitamin C (psoriasis has been linked to an immune system dysfunction), 400 mg. vitamin E and 600 mg. niacin (vitamin B3). Third, two years ago I was finally diagnosed as bipolar and after taking 600 mg. of lithium every day, I am calm, cool and collected and achieving 8 hours of sleep a night. I no longer get stressed out, a component that definitely triggers psoriasis outbreaks. Sunlight in moderate doses is also very helpful in combating flareups. I hope this information can be of some use to others suffering this debilitating skin condition.
