I spent a long time trying to figure out how to treat my severe scalp psoriasis. Here is what finally worked for me: 1) I went to a top-of-the-line dermatologist. It cost me extra money in the short run (top derms in my city don’t take insurance) but it was SO worth it. It was a completely different experience. First of all, he was confident we could get it under control (my previous derm had basically said: you’ll just have to deal with this) and second, he was brutally honest about what the meds would do and what I would need to do (for example, exercise at least 5 hours per week). 2) I enrolled in a mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) meditation class. Google it to see if there is one in your area. Or, you can pick up the book and CDs by Jon Kabat-Zinn. 3) Per my derm’s suggestion, I did increase my exercise. 4) I tried eliminating certain foods (and did for a while) but in the end did not think these proved to be triggers. 5) I began taking yoga classes and practicing 1-2 times per week. 6) I used the meds prescribed by my derm but only for a short time, long enough to get it under control (I used Dermasmooth and Taclonex). 7) After getting it under control with the meds, I started using Head and Shoulders for dry scalp as my regular shampoo. I don’t know which things had the most impact but I can say that it is 90% gone now and I am so grateful. Thanks to everyone who posted tips here. I learned a lot from all of you.
