NSAIDs for arthritis, Dovonex, tar and vitamin E for psoriasis

February 22, 2013 — 10:54pm

I am a little reluctant to write this because no two people react to the medications in the same way. I have had psoriasis for nearly 40 years, and I’ve tried many, many different medications. I also have the arthritis to go with it. I have found the nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) work differently for different people. I have taken Meclomen (meclofenamate sodium) 100 mg three or four times a day for the last 17 years. It is the only NSAID that works for me. When Meclomen came out in 1980, there were reports that some psoriatic patients experienced a clearing of the plaques. I did not have such good fortune. I did get relief from the pain and inflammation of the arthritis. However, the joints in my hands, fingers, wrists, knees and ankles have continued to deteriorate due to the disease process. I am very comfortable 99 percent of the time. Secondly, I have experienced a clearing of the plaques during the past six months. The only thing that I have done differently is add 400 IU of vitamin E to my diet each day. I am not a proponent of vitamin E. I started taking it only to please my wife, who thinks it might have some protective capability against heart attacks. I have been applying a coal tar solution to the plaques after my bath at night. In the morning I apply Dovonex [prescription medication] to the plaques. I have been using Dovonex for about 21/2 years, the coal solution for 15 years. The plaques are gone. My fingernails are clearing up. The pitting is going away-slowly, to be sure. I am not sure what caused this remission, but I am delighted! Incidentally, I retired after 30 years of service with Parke- Davis (makers of Meclomen).
